AFA refuses to show film clips

Air Force Academy officials declined to show clips from a documentary critical of Christian proselytizing in the U.S. military at a seminar Wednesday on war and religion.

Footage from “Constantine’s Sword,” a documentary premiering April 19 in New York, was scheduled to be shown to cadets during the panel discussion.

But academy sponsors decided at the last minute against using the film clips because several Catholic organizations nationwide complained that the footage was anti-Catholic, academy spokesmen Johnny Whitaker said.

Constantine’s Sword

has been shown in a number of churches, synagogues and universities around the country.

On Monday, March 10th, a 20-foot-tall screen was set up in the nave of the National Cathedral in Washington where over 500 people watched the film, then rose for a standing ovation. The previous day, James Carroll was the featured speaker at the Cathedral’s Sunday Forum with Dean Samuel Lloyd.

The film received a similar reception at Trinity Wall Street in New York City, The University of California Santa Barbara, All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass., Suffolk University in Boston and Westminister College in Salt Lake City.

Devout Catholic answers a call to challenge church
James Carroll, a former priest, uses his personal spiritual journey to drive ‘Constantine’s Sword.’

Author James Carroll is an idiosyncratic Catholic, a former priest who still celebrates his faith yet rejects the very roots of its doctrine, viewing Christianity’s promise of eternal life as “destructive” and the cross as a symbol of Roman Emperor Constantine’s lust for power.

This unorthodox perspective drives “Constantine’s Sword,” a documentary premiering Sunday at the Los Angeles Film Festival about Carroll’s personal discovery of anti-Semitism in the Catholic church and its influence in today’s evangelical Christian movement.
